Choosing the right time tracking software is a challenging task — especially when you’ve narrowed it down to two great choices: Hubstaff and Replicon.

There are a number of factors to look at before making your decision. You might consider your industry, the size of your company, and the type of work you do. Or, the decision might come down to features, price, and accessibility.

Check out our Hubstaff vs. Replicon breakdown to see which app is best for you.

Comparing Hubstaff and Replicon side-by-side

Hubstaff vs Replicon: Full comparison

Hubstaff and Replicon are both time tracking and payroll solutions, but they cater to different audiences. Hubstaff’s time tracking, proof of work, and GPS features make it a versatile option for in-office, remote, field, and hybrid teams. Replicon, on the other hand, doesn’t track the productivity of individual employees in real time, but it has positioned itself as an enterprise-grade solution. IT, professional services, and government contractors can benefit from Replicon’s suite of apps.

One of the most noticeable differences is that Hubstaff is an all-in-one solution while Replicon has a number of products that users use simultaneously: TimeAttend, Workforce Management, TimeOff, and CloudClock. This adds a layer of complexity as you’ll need to figure out which products you need. Each one has its own pricing structure, so you’ll want to pay attention to this section of our comparison.

Both Hubstaff and Replicon are designed to help you minimize admin work. Deciding between the two will come down to what tools you need to reach your goals.

Time tracking

Hubstaff

Hubstaff’s time tracking features help you manage freelancers, full-time employees, and field teams better.

Users can choose between time tracking apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android — and switch between devices seamlessly without losing a second of tracked time.

Or, track time from your desktop using the Hubstaff web app or Google Chrome extension. Hubstaff’s lightweight desktop apps run efficiently and quietly in the background. Working offline? Hubstaff will track time and sync up hours once you’re connected to the internet again.

Hubstaff is, hands down, the best time tracking platform on the market. My business would not function efficiently without it, and I honestly wouldn't be able to be as mobile as I am without it.

Jessica N. / Capterra

Idle timeout settings, manual time entries with notes, and work breaks make it easier to ensure the accuracy of tracked time. By the time you reach one-step timesheet approvals, you’re ready to pay your employees within a few clicks.

Payroll is even easier for field teams. Location-based tracking with geofences helps workers clock in and out automatically whenever they enter or leave a Job site. Like other tracked time in Hubstaff, these GPS time entries become timesheets automatically.

When it comes to time tracking and workforce management, over 70,000 remote, in-office, hybrid, and distributed team members trust Hubstaff’s flexibility.

Replicon

Replicon’s cloud-based time tracking suite is great for enterprise-grade companies with numerous moving parts. Like Hubstaff, time tracking across multiple devices is simple and automated.

However, turning tracked time in Replicon into timesheets is a bit of a challenge for larger teams.

Luckily, Replicon TimeAttend lets companies delegate timesheet, PTO, and overtime approvals to up to five different levels of staff. This way, you can build your own timesheet approval workflows and ensure that no tracked time goes unaccounted for.

Productivity measurement & activity monitoring

Hubstaff

With Hubstaff, productivity is never an afterthought. You can view projects, hours worked, and screenshots right from your dashboard. Or, take productivity features a step further with activity monitoring.

With activity features, Hubstaff will calculate the percentage of time spent interacting with the mouse and keyboard. You’ll have a real-time gauge of productivity every 10 minutes.

Website and app usage operates similarly. You’ll be able to see which tools your team uses the most when tracking time. The Insights add-on takes this idea even further by allowing you to mark apps and URLs as productive or unproductive. Your team can see how their work days are spent and how their usage compares to similar roles.

You can cross reference this data to find your ideal hours and tools to reach peak productivity.

Hubstaff is a pretty useful tool for managers to track employee productivity. This is ultra important now that most people are working from home. It helps me decipher who is actually working.

Patrick S. / GetApp review

Replicon

Replicon doesn’t track productivity on a personal level through keyboard and mouse activity, but you can see live project updates from a customizable dashboard.

As your employees track time to the “Activities” on their to-do lists, you’ll have a gauge of how long each task is taking. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see what tools were used and how productive employees were during that time frame like you can with Hubstaff.

Reporting

Hubstaff

With Hubstaff, you’ll have access to over 30 different reports for payment, invoicing, and time & activity — but don’t make reporting an afterthought.

When you login, Hubstaff will let you see hours worked, activity scores, screenshots, and more, all without exporting reports.

Your customizable dashboard allows you to prioritize the widgets you find most valuable. That way, you’ll get a clear overview of what’s getting done every time you log in.

Reporting is very in-depth and the level of control the app offers in terms of tracking options is amazing.

Tosin A. / GetApp review

Hubstaff offers a wide range of reports that help business owners and managers better visualize their operations. Here are a few of the many highlights:

Job site and Attendance reports - You can see when workers arrive at or leave a job with the Job site report. If you’re having issues with crew members, you’ll know who has been abandoning, missing, or showing up late to shifts with the Job attendance report.

Time & Activities report - See how frequently each employee interacts with their mouse and keyboard. Then, select the employees, dates, and time’s you need and export with a few simple clicks.

Expense reports - Keep tabs on your largest projects with expense reports. You can sort expenses by member, project, or Work order. If you already have a payment integration set up, you can send one-time payments to team members and freelancers right from the Hubstaff web app.

Replicon

Like Hubstaff, Replicon pairs conventional reporting with real-time analytics to keep you and your clients informed at all times.

You can customize your dashboard with charts, timelines, and other data to track project spend and resource allocation on the fly. Then, share dashboards and reports with clients via link sharing or email.

Integrations with Tableu, Microsoft Power BI, and Google BigQuery make Replicon reporting even more powerful.

Invoicing

Hubstaff

Spend more time on billable tasks with Hubstaff’s automated invoices. You can add your own logos, branding, line items, and other custom fields. Then, deploy invoices to clients right from Hubstaff.

Navigate to the invoices tab and filter by Clients or Teams to see full, partial, and outstanding payments. You can also check on any pending drafts that still need to be sent.

Automatic line items, set bill rates for team members and integrations with popular accounting apps like QuickBooks and FreshBooks help you close out your books with minimal admin work.

Since switching to Hubstaff, invoicing and contractor payment times have been cut down substantially.

Kahl Orr / Founder of Rise

Replicon

Replicon allows you to turn timesheets into invoices, but it lacks the customization of Hubstaff.

You can tweak some settings and manually include ad hoc line items for costs that weren’t reflected in a timesheet. That said, you won’t be able to add custom branding or other personal touches.

Even when you deploy invoices via email, you’ll have to create a link and paste it into the email editor. Clients will have to open the invoice in a new tab. You won’t be alerted when they open this link, so you’ll have to keep tabs on that yourself.

Replicon does offer accounting integrations with tools like Xero, QuickBooks, and Salesforce, though.

Hubstaff

With Hubstaff ’s GPS location tracking features, you’ll know exactly where your team is at all times. You can see which routes your crews take to and from Job sites to give clients more accurate ETAs.

With geofenced time tracking, crews will see their time start or stop automatically whenever they enter or leave a Job site. This helps you streamline payroll and prevent time theft and buddy punching.

Replicon

Replicon joins Hubstaff as one of the few time tracking apps that caters to both in-office and distributed teams.

GPS monitoring, geofencing, and location tagging make Replicon’s mobile app valuble to distributed teams that spend their days on the move. That said, employees working in construction, landscaping, IT, and other field industries will have to remember to manually clock in and out.

Project budgeting

Hubstaff

Did you know that 70% of projects fail to meet expectations?

With Hubstaff, you don’t have to fear becoming another statistic. You can set project budgets with hours, pay rates, and bill rates in mind.

Other tools use complicated reporting features to keep you on track.

Like with activity, Hubstaff provides real-time budgeting updates to help you keep track of project spend before you go over budget.

That way, you can reassign teams, limit resources, and make other necessary adjustments as needed.

Replicon

Replicon caters to larger enterprises, so it’s no surprise their project budgeting features are a point of emphasis.

With Replicon, you can create project forecasts, budgets, and reports. Then, customize your own dashboard, embed it for use on other apps, and share the link with team leads and clients.

Intelligent product validations and approvals ensure every member of your organization has eyes on the project and can sign off on it before getting started.

Employees can track time to Replicon projects for more effective cost management. Even on-the-go, you’ll have mobile time entries to keep your project on budget. You’ll see the data reflected on the dashboard in real time.

Scheduling

Hubstaff

Budgeting data is only helpful if you can use it to make data-driven decisions. Shift scheduling features allow you to apply this data to create schedules, set weekly hours limits, and assemble the right team for each job.

With Hubstaff, you can assign teams to Work orders. Then, attach images, set geofences, and add project details so your crew knows when, where, and how to do their job.

Attendance tracking helps to prevent late, missed, or abandoned shifts. You’ll receive alerts so you can make changes accordingly. Detailed reports allow you to keep track of frequent offenders.

Replicon

Shift scheduling is another key Replicon feature. User profiles allow you to designate administrators, shift workers, and schedule managers — each with their own set of unique permissions.

Schedule managers can create, edit and publish schedules that workers can see via web or mobile. Replicon’s shift users will be tasked with tracking their clock-in, clock-out, and break times.

Managers can see this information when they view reports.

Payroll management

Hubstaff

One of the best parts about Hubstaff is how easy it is to turn tracked time into timesheets.

Start by creating pay rates for each employee. Then, choose between fixed and hourly rates. You can even set your own custom pay periods for each employee to decide who will be paid weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

When employees track time, it will be added to their respective timesheets automatically. If you need to add manual time entries, you can. You’ll have itemized timesheets sorted by project that you can approve with one simple click.

Integrations with popular payroll tools like PayPal, Gusto, Wise, and Payoneer allow you to pay employees directly through the app.

Replicon

Managing payroll in Replicon is easy if you have the right permissions. Start by setting timesheet periods based on your team’s pay period.

You can then assign paycodes for PTO, double time, or overtime accordingly. Then, use Payroll Workbench to view time and expenses.

Unfortunately, you’ll need to download this data and export it to a third-party payroll system to pay your team.

Hubstaff vs. Replicon:
Which one is right for you?

Well there you have it. As you can see, Hubstaff and Replicon are both strong time tracking solutions. That said, there are a few key differences.

If you’re managing massive enterprise teams with complicated expense reports, permissions, and approvals, you might find Replicon enticing. If not, you’ll probably find its lack of customization a little frustrating.

Organizations that prioritize transparency over complicated team structures can benefit from Hubstaff’s activity scores, customizable invoices, and seamless time tracking.

One-click timesheets allow you to pay teams through the app. This helps teams stay focused on their work instead of time-consuming administrative tasks.

Hubstaff and Replicon have a few key differences when it comes to activity, location-based time tracking, and reporting. Still, both are excellent products with robust feature sets. Which one should you choose?
